Arabica or Robusta?

Coffee is so diverse. Every coffee lover knows that the  two most common and well-known coffee beans are Arabica and Robusta. But not a lot of people know what the difference between the two are.

What's the Difference?

Arabica and Robusta actually differ in a lot of ways such as taste, where it is grown, caffeine level, price, and quality.  


When coffee was first discovered by goats, it is said that the coffee cherries were Arabica! Arabica is far more popular than Robusta coffee beans. It is known to be more 'flavorful' and contain less caffeine than Robusta. Usually Arabica coffee tastes like either 

  • Chocolate
  • Nutty
  • Fruity/Berry
  • Honey

Arabica coffee is mostly grown in tropical countries. Countries that are closer to the equator and have a subtropical climate actually grow the best Arabica coffee. Arabica Coffee must be grown in very high and elevated locations because of how fragile and vulnerable the beans can be. More than 60% of coffee grown and produced today is Arabica but it is more expensive because of how hard it is to grow! I personally still find it  100% worth it. 


 Known for its bitter and low acidic taste, many people not find Robusta coffee very appealing. This darker bean are for those coffee lovers who need that extra kick of caffeine, Robusta is the coffee for you! It is known to have about 25% more caffeine than Arabica coffee. 

Many might describe the taste of Robusta Coffee as:

  • Bitter
  • Grainy
  • Earthy
  • Nutty

Robusta coffee can be found growing in Southeast Asia and some African countries. It grows best at low altitudes unlike Arabica. Growing Robusta coffee is also cheaper than Arabica, so go drink it up! Many people take their an espresso robusta coffee with cream to add more flavor. So who knows, maybe robusta doesn't taste that bitter after all! 

Which is better Arabica and Robusta

Obviously, Arabica is a more popular choice than Robusta when it comes to flavor. But if you are looking for a strong caffeine kick I would choose Robusta. There is no contest when it comes to choosing which is "better," they're both different in great ways. Its really up to what you are looking for in a cup of coffee!
